As of 2001 India census, Gwalior had a population of 826,919. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Gwalior has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 63%. In Gwalior, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age. Hindi is the main language spoken in Gwalior. There is a strong Marathi influence because of the Maratha rule, and Marathis have played important roles in the development of the city.
